SENSITIVE SKINS: A KEY CONCERN FOR COSMETICIANS

Ingredient suppliers or brands, cosmetics players are increasingly more interested in sensitive skins explains Premium Beauty News in its special issue: “COSMETIC INGREDIENTS 2017”.

We learn that 2 women out of 3 say they have sensitive skin. Dermocosmetics and cosmetics brands keep increasing their solutions for this target.

Anne Sirvent, Dermscan Scientific Communication and R&D Manager, was interviewed on this topic. She explains that “sensitive skins present few clinical signs that can objectively be documented. Apart from parameters related to erythema, dryness, and skin roughness, which can be quantified visually, skin sensitivity is usually conveyed by feelings (tingling, tightness, overheating). We have chosen a multi-criteria approach to assess product efficacy with a panel selected with sensitivity tests (sensitivity to capsaicin, lactic acid, and temperature). Microcirculation, the skin barrier condition, hydration, and the composition of intercellular lipids can be followed up in accordance with the claims our customers want. We have also set up subjective assessment and life quality questionnaires to complete the tests.”
